I watched Gone With the Wind (1939) so you didn’t have to. Here is my short and to-the-point review. (If you are interested in watching me react to any of these movies, subscribe to the paid tier of the Substack: $5.00 a month, $50.00 for the year.)
Rating: 8/10
Explain Rating:
If Birth of a Nation (1915) was for White men, Gone with the Wind (1939) was for White women. It followed the exact same formula of revisionist history when it came to slavery, the Civil War, and the Reconstruction Era. But it was DAMN GOOD.
When you know the truth, movies like this are more entertaining than infuriating. The problem isn’t the content of the movie itself; it’s the fact that people believe it as truth. Not a scene was wasted—the set, the costumes, everything always pushed the plot forward. They don’t make movies that look this expensive anymore.
I could never give a racist-ass movie a ten—that would be sacrilegious—but it deserves this score. I was entertained.
