A lot of people view Japan as a utopia without having an understanding of the true violence of its history. Part of that hidden history contains violence and within that a deep history of sexual violence against women in the asian diaspora through the Comfort Women institution. The purposeful omitting of this history and the continued ducking of any accountability for what “Comfort Women” went through cast a black cloud over the seemingly pristine reputation of Japan.
In this episode I go on a journey through the harrowing experiences of these women, highlighting the systematic and brutal nature of their victimization. The narrative vividly portrays the shift in Japanese culture from the 1930s to the present, with a lingering mistrust among older Chinese, Korean, and Filipino individuals.
The disposability of these women is a recurring theme in Japanese culture.Seen through the lack of acknowledgement and apology from the Japanese government. The survivors, are often treated as mere units of supply, i felt compelled to continue their fight for recognition and acknowledgment.
In a society that often glosses over uncomfortable truths, my exploration of the Comfort Women experience
serves as a reminder that, to truly move forward, we must confront the shadows of our past.
